Last week on Scott’s Thoughts I set a goal to make some homemade tortillas, this week I’m back and ready to tell you all about it. First off, let’s talk about why I chose to make tortillas. I find wraps to be such a staple item to have, you can make so many different meals with them! I was inspired after I ate a very yummy wrap sandwich from Mac’s at UVic. It made me want to go buy some wraps, but then after looking at the price and ingredients of the wraps from the grocery store, I thought “why don’t I just make them myself, I bet they’ve got like 5 ingredients tops!” And boy was I right. This recipe only called for 5 ingredients, and one of them was water! Anywho, enough with the introduction, let’s get into the part you’ve all been waiting for — What went well and what might need to be altered for next time around.

What Went Well?

First off, this recipe was extremely simple. There was no yeast activation like all of the other recipes I’ve done, and it did not take long at all. They also tasted SO GOOD, I am not kidding! They tasted better than any tortilla I have ever had, no joke. My brain cannot comprehend how something with no sugar can taste that good. The instructions on the website were very detailed which helped me know I was doing the right thing. Overall, I am very happy with how they turned out and I’m definitely going to make this a regular recipe for myself, especially seeing as they’re so simple and don’t cost me many ingredients.

Improvements

The only thing I would change next time is to make the tortillas larger. The recipe said they should be rolled out to about 6 inches, however, a 6-inch tortilla is best for a small taco and I was going for a sandwich/wrap size, which would be 12 inches or so. To compensate for this I simply combined the balls of dough, making it into 8ths instead of 16ths. This worked out fine, however, they were still a bit too small and a bit too thick for me. Next time I might try doubling the recipe and cutting it into larger fractions. Hopefully that helps a bit!

Conclusion & Next week

In conclusion, this recipe went great and I would definitely recommend it to any beginner! Next week I’m considering making either plain bagels or English muffins. Stay tuned! 😀
